Harengon Fighter

Background

Though his memories are blurred, Virro was born in the Feywild, his clan bound to the service of a minor fey lord as warriors. He took to combat naturally from a young age and developed a strong fondness for it. But the harsh discipline of his teachers and the strict, frugal life under his lord’s command bred a deep resentment in him over the years.

His way out came when a fairy gate to the material plane appeared. His lord and a rival fey both moved to claim it, and in the skirmish that followed, Virro saw his chance. One of his own comrades realised what he intended and moved to block him. He doesn’t remember much about them. He didn’t hesitate. One strike, and his escape was secured.

He ran as far from the gate as he could. After a few days wandering, his memories of the Feywild growing foggier with each mile, he stumbled across a trade caravan under attack from goblins. One of the goblins took him for an enemy and attacked, and that settled the question of whose side he was on. With the goblins defeated, the caravan took him on for the rest of the journey and paid him the wage of a guard who hadn’t survived.

That night he spent nearly every coin on food, drink, gambling, and music. He found a drinking companion in a travelling scholar who filled the hours with tales of trolls, dungeons, and adventurers.

He woke the next morning in a field on the edge of town, head pounding, stomach turning. He dunked his head in a nearby stream and when he lifted it, he looked out over rolling hills, lush forests, and distant mountains. He knew then that he was free. Free to choose his own fights, spend his rewards how he liked, and go wherever he wanted. Endless horizons, and he intended to seize everything he could.

Session 1 - Into the Mists

Virro was among the five travellers in Garlan Shepard’s wagon when the fog rolled in and swallowed the road. He was the one who caught the silhouette of a great wolf among the trees, its eyes burning an unnatural amber, before it slipped back into the brush. When Garlan collapsed and the wagon broke apart, the party fled on foot.

At the The Gallows Oak inn, Virro sat with Adeline, who agreed to add him to the tapestry she was embroidering, a long line of adventurers stitched hand in hand, each with an X across their eyes. When she finished his caricature, the tapestry slid from the table, the figures seeming to drag him down with them.

At the Vistani camp, Virro had his fortune read by Madam Eva along with the rest of the party.

Session 2 - A Sad Village of Few Souls

Restless after the reading, Virro slipped outside to find Laszlo, The Storyteller, who he’d clocked earlier. When he asked if there was anyone worth crossing blades with, Laszlo’s grin widened. A crowd gathered quickly, money changed hands, and Laszlo played to every parry for a laugh. Midway through the bout he scratched a magic circle into the dirt beneath their feet, meant to snare Virro mid-step. It didn’t work. Virro broke through his guard and put him on the ground. The party collected 18 gold, with Edric Storm the only one who had bet on him to win.

In the The Blood of the Vine tavern in Barovia village, Virro pressed Arik for information about Arabelle and got nothing back. He had better luck with the three Vistani women at the table, Mirabelle, Sorvia, and Alenka, though Mirabelle refused to answer questions straight and turned it into a drinking game instead. Virro played along.

Later, he attempted to alter the tab sheet while Arik had stepped away from the bar. Mirabelle caught him, told him it was brazen, wrote his name on the tabs, and threw them in the fire.

He and Edric Storm went together to the Burgomaster’s manor, finding it besieged. Ireena Kolyana met them at the door and took them for agents of the dark lord. Once they convinced her otherwise, she let them inside, where the body of Kolyan Indirovich lay in state.

Session 3 - Spawn

At the manor, Virro and Edric Storm compared the letter Edric had received with an undelivered letter penned by Kolyan Indirovich, and saw that Edric’s had been altered. The original seemed to be warning people away from Barovia. Ireena Kolyana asked to be escorted out of the village once her father was buried, and Virro set out with her and Edric for the church.

At the centre of town they fell in with Ignacious Teegan and Vesper Kasimov. When Retnuh rode up on a Nightmare, gifted to him by Strahd, Virro sized the creature up like something dangerous. “You understand a nightmare like that could be watching us right now. Reporting everything we say back to him.” When Retnuh insisted she was a good horse, Virro replied, “She is not a horse.”

Rather than argue, he circled behind her and slapped her flank, shouting at her to run off. Buccephalus reared and kicked him square in the chest, throwing him several feet and knocking him unconscious, his surcoat smouldering where the blow landed.

Ireena later proposed that she and Virro use the horse as a channel back to Strahd, feeding him only the misinformation they chose.

At the church, the party learned that Father Donavich’s son, Doru, was a vampire chained in the undercroft, and went down to confront him. When Doru bit Retnuh, Virro and Edric threw him off. The party used the pillars and Doru’s chain to hold him back until he found some slack, leapt to the ceiling, and dug his claws into Virro’s shoulder. Before Doru could bite, Retnuh’s axe struck his side, and the floor above collapsed on all of them.

Session 4 - Horsemen

When the church came down, Virro woke somewhere else entirely: standing on black, still water that stretched to a horizon sealed in amber, like glass. A figure in robes of grey and gold, with glowing amber eyes, stood on the water and spoke in a warm voice that rang in his head. It told him he was drowning, trapped “within the stone and blessed rubble”, and offered him strength: “Enough to pull stone from stone. Enough to save who can still be saved. It will cost you nothing today, but nothing is without a price.” It said it sensed within him a spark of divinity. Virro took its outstretched hand.

He woke beneath the rubble with the strength and vigour of youth surging through him, and tirelessly lifted his companions from the earth. He found Vesper first, in the form of a man-sized raven, then Ireena, Retnuh, Edric and Ignacious, and last of all Father Donavich. When Donavich asked after his son, Virro picked up a trail where rocks had been moved and realised it was Doru’s, and sent Ignacious and Retnuh after him.

When Rahadin tried to speak with him and Edric, both told him their names were Retnuh, and as Rahadin walked off, Virro mocked his dress sense, stopping him in his tracks.

On the graveyard road, during the fight with the rising zombies, Virro fired at a zombie standing motionless beside Red. The arrow struck Red in the heart instead. Red fell, then sat bolt upright moments later, pale and apparently undead, and Virro pulled the arrow from his chest.

At Morgantha’s windmill, he told her he wasn’t a tea person but a wine person. She rapped her knuckle on the teapot and poured him wine from it.

Session 5 - All will be well

Virro argued for camping near the mill, since whatever lurked in the dark seemed to keep clear of the women there, but the party camped below the hill instead. On the road to Vallaki, he asked Ernest Festibule the obvious question first, “Are you alive?” (“In a manner of speaking.”) After the party burned Dmitry’s body, Virro took the smiling knight’s sword, swearing to Retnuh that he would return it to that spot when he was done with it.

In Vallaki, Virro found himself in a face-off on the stage with Izek Strazni, remarking on the giant’s lack of a smiling demeanour. (“I have condition.”) Volenta Popofsky was fascinated by his ears and touched them in amazement. At Blinsky’s Toys he bought a hand puppet of Strahd, complete with a stiff cape and a thin, hungry smile.
