Background
Once based in the north ward of Waterdeep, a former paladin of Ilmater and member of the Order of the Golden Cups. Once, coming across an injured boy, Ignacious asked how he was hurt. The boy said he fell. He healed him.
He would cross paths with the boy a few more times. Each time, the boy said he had fallen. The injuries were clearly inflicted by another. Ignacious asked if his father hurt him. The boy told him everything.
He confronted the father, who was apologetic enough, or too much a coward to raise his voice to a man in mail. Ignacious left him with a warning.
Three days later, tending to the sick near St. Lauren Hospice, a young girl came running up to him, injured and crying. Before he could speak she said the boy’s name. They were fighting.
He ran.
When he had warned the father not to harm his son, the man had turned to beating his daughter instead. The older brother tried to stop it and eventually struck his father. The father took this as justification to hit back.
When Ignacious found the boy, he was already gone.
He was in plain garb that day, no mail or shield. The father didn’t recognise him. He had no weapon, but he’d cut bandages that morning and still had the knife on him.
He stabbed the father in the gut. The man fell and groaned.
“Don’t worry, I’ll patch you right up,” he said through a clenched jaw.
And he did. His healing hands worked just fine. So he stabbed him again. This continued long after his hands could heal anymore.
His fellow Cupbearers found him before the city guard did. Hands slick with blood, a grim corpse at his feet, a traumatised girl with no family left in the corner.
He was cast out. Even the Companions of the Noble Heart thought he had gone too far.
Now he wanders, his oath and spirit as broken as the god he once served.
Session 1 - Into the Mists
Ignacious was among the five travellers picked up by Garlan Shepard on the road north of Neverwinter, alongside Virro, Edric Storm, Retnuh, and Red. When the fog swallowed the road and Garlan’s fever worsened, Ignacious moved to heal him but was too late. The old man collapsed from the driver’s box and was dragged into the treeline by something unseen.
The party fled on foot, eventually reaching the The Gallows Oak inn, where Ignacious helped negotiate lodging in exchange for labour. He sat with the Senostrov family and learned of the land they had wandered into. At the Vistani camp near the River Ivlis, he entered Madam Eva’s tent with the rest of the party and had his fortune read.
Session 2 - A Sad Village of Few Souls
In Barovia village, Ignacious took it upon himself to go door to door searching for Arabelle. He found his way to Bildrath’s Mercantile, where Bildrath Cantomere was standoffish but eventually let slip that Krogarov had passed through with a wagon in need of repair and a horse to be re-shoed, helped by Bildrath’s Boy and leaving with three large sacks.
Earlier in the evening, stepping outside the The Blood of the Vine for air, he was approached by an old woman pushing a wooden cart through the fog. She offered him a soft brown pastry and spoke of her sisters having moved on, leaving her alone at an old mill outside the village. He accepted the pastry. The moment he swallowed it, the world sharpened and softened all at once, colours deepening, sounds arriving late and layered. He sat with it washing over him.
Continuing his search, he found a townhouse with an open door and caught sight of someone being dragged inside. He entered. The door closed behind him.
Session 3 - Spawn
Inside the townhouse, a figure in the corner brandished a short blade at him and, in a performatively deep voice from behind a cloth face covering, ordered him to stand in the corner. It was a lean, wiry young man with long pointed ears, exhausted and clutching a bleeding wound in his side. He had drawn Ignacious in by throwing his voice and casting illusions, having watched the party since they arrived in the village, and needed to know whether they could be trusted.
He introduced himself as Vesper Kasimov, expected to deliver a package to an organisation called the Keepers of the Feather. Ignacious offered to help with the task and to mend his wounds, and the two headed out into the street together.
At the centre of town they fell in with Ireena Kolyana, Virro, and Edric Storm. When Retnuh rode up on a Nightmare and mentioned Strahd’s name, Ignacious went rigid. When the horse kicked Virro unconscious, Ignacious was the one who rushed to check on him.
The party escorted Ireena to the church to see her father buried. Ignacious peeled off into a side room, where a straw mattress sat beneath a carved wooden sun. What caught his eye were the dozens of small whittled figures on the table and shelf, along with the knives and tools used to make them. The earliest were crude and blocky, and each one was more refined than the last. Among them was a figure of a woman, flawless, worked so finely it no longer looked carved at all.
In the chapel, it was Ignacious who asked Father Donavich whether he was keeping someone beneath the floor. The priest admitted it was his son, Doru, who hasn’t left the undercroft since he came back from the castle. When the party learned Doru had been stricken with vampirism, Ignacious recalled a story of a vampire who became a monk by dedicating himself to the light of Lathander, and told them that a strict regimen, or death, is the only cure. The party went down into the undercroft to confront him.
In the undercroft, Doru came at the party dragging his chain, asking if they had come to feed him. Ignacious raised a hand and offered him terms: “Swear it. Swear you’ll harm no person again. Hunt animals if you must feed, or take only from those who offer it willingly. Do that, and we’ll help you.” Doru watched his throat the whole time he spoke, and then lunged. The fight ended when the floor above gave way and the church collapsed on top of them.
Session 4 - Horsemen
Virro dug Ignacious out of the rubble of the collapsed church. When Virro found Doru’s trail, Ignacious and Retnuh rode after him and found him in a ditch just outside town, broken and gasping. “This darkness, you can’t control it. You almost killed us,” Ignacious told him. “This will be easier. There will be peace. Stay still, lad.” He pinned Doru to the muddy ground while Retnuh drove a stake into his heart, and Doru dissolved into white ash in their hands.
On the graveyard road, Ignacious was the first to sense the zombies rising: “Something’s moving.” After Red took an arrow to the heart and got back up, Ignacious put it plainly: “Lad, I think you might be dead. Or undead at least.”
He went into Morgantha’s windmill with Edric and Virro, took tea with her and her daughters, and heard where Arabelle had been taken, and what Morgantha wanted in return: the head of Rahadin.
Session 5 - All will be well
At the camp below the old mill, Ignacious found a thicket of plump, glossy orange berries and crushed a bushel of them into a deep amber tincture. Sleep took him before he could test it. He dreamed of a cornfield, the stalks taller than a man, with a mill looming above them, its sails turning against a starless sky. He woke in a cold sweat, exhausted, the flask still unopened beside him.
On the road to Vallaki he asked Ernest Festibule to travel with the party, but Festibule declined: “The wards against the undead prevent my entry.”
In Vallaki, Ignacious explained to Volenta Popofsky that Virro’s ears were real, and wondered aloud whether the Baron might be a vampire. He visited Bozena at The Merry Crust and learned that her flour comes from Krezk, and nothing has arrived for weeks. At St. Andral’s Church, Father Lucian asked him and Edric to help find the stolen bones of St. Andral, without which the town’s protection against the undead won’t function.
