Adopted daughter of the late Burgomaster Kolyan Indirovich and sister of Ismark The Lesser.
When Virro and Edric Storm reached the Burgomaster’s manor in Barovia village, they found it besieged by forces loyal to Strahd von Zarovich. Ireena met them at the door and questioned them, taking them for agents of the dark lord. Once they convinced her otherwise, she let them inside, where her father’s body lay in state.
She is not unknown to Strahd. At The Blood of the Vine, one of the Vistani women asked Ismark how many times his sister had been visited by a mysterious “he”, and he stormed out. Her father’s undelivered letter says she has been bitten by a vampyr these past nights. And on the road outside the village, Strahd named her to Retnuh as the one person he wanted brought to Castle Ravenloft, to be “looked after properly.” Retnuh agreed to bring her once Arabelle is found.
Ireena asked the party to escort her out of Barovia village toward a safer town, but only once her father had been buried. She, Virro, and Edric set out for the church, hoping Father Donavich would bless the burial in the name of the Morninglord.
At the centre of town they fell in with Ignacious Teegan and Vesper Kasimov, and then Retnuh rode up on the Nightmare Buccephalus. At the mention of Strahd’s name, Ireena’s expression closed off entirely. When Retnuh asked her to come with him to Castle Ravenloft, her answer came without hesitation:
“I will go to that castle when I am ready to bring the fight to him myself. Not before.”
A short while later, it was Ireena who turned the horse into something useful. She proposed that she and Virro use Buccephalus as a channel back to Strahd, feeding him whatever misinformation the party wanted him to believe.
When the church collapsed, Virro pulled Ireena from the rubble free of any major injuries. Her father’s burial went ahead in the church grounds, in the coffin she and Ismark had made for him.
On the road between two halves of an old graveyard, she fought alongside the party against the zombies that rose from the graves.
Outside the old mill, while the others were inside with Morgantha, Ireena asked Retnuh whether he really would have given her to Strahd. “The cool magic guy who gave me this horse? Yeah, maybe,” he said, “but there’s no end date on the agreement.” She found his honesty “quite disarming”. She had never left the valley, and had never heard of an ocean. Retnuh’s description, “a massive lake, as far as the eye can see,” struck her as terrifying, and she leaned in, wholly interested, when he started on mermen.
On the road to Vallaki she met Ernest Festibule, and asked him why the smiling knight had wanted to kill him.
In the town square of Vallaki, where Baron Vargas Vallakovich was hearing petitions, the giant Izek Strazni fixed his eyes on her from the moment the party approached the crowd.
When Volenta Popofsky approached the party, Ireena asked Virro whether they could trust her, but reasoned that she at least couldn’t be a vampire, since the wards on the town keep them out. In Blinsky’s Toys she found a doll made in her exact likeness, down to the line of her jaw, and learned that Izek Strazni demands one from the toymaker every month.
