A scarecrow as large as a horse and shaped like one, standing among the straw and sack figures in the field outside Morgantha’s windmill. He has hooves of blackthorn root, a mane and forelock of frayed hemp rope combed straight, and bone-white button eyes hanging mismatched over a face of sack and straw. When Retnuh scratched him as though he were a living horse, he moved his head toward Retnuh’s hand.
Morgantha sent him with the party when they left the mill: “I can’t have any of you unhorsed. Take Tatters with you. He needs a walk. You don’t need to feed him, but you can if you want to.”
